Dear Delegates,
It is our distinct pleasure to invite you to this year’s Utrecht, Netherlands International Simulation of the United Nations (UNISUN) that will be held on May 1-4, 2009. Organized by one of the most internationally oriented colleges in Europe, UNISUN promises four days of stimulating and challenging debate on the most pressing international issues in a setting that is a stone throw away from the legal capital of the world. In previous years, the UNISUN conference hosted over 30 nationalities ranging from Nigerian to German and Azerbaijani. This year, too, UNISUN aims to upkeep this diversity by welcoming 200 students on undergraduate or graduate level to participate in the conference. We aim to provide participants coming from all parts of the globe with a challenging, interesting and fun experience, during which we seek to cater to the desires of people from a large variety of cultural background, educational focuses and levels of previous experience with United Nations Simulations.
Our theme this year will be “Idealism in the 21st Century” inspired by the founding principles of the United Nations; Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points. Those fourteen points now live in the system of the United Nations which many have come to doubt and that is why the organizing team of UNISUN 2009 has decided to revisit those ideals and revoke Wilson’s idealism in the 21st century. Thus, the participating delegates through their work in our various committees and councils will have the chance to put the UN system to the test and explore the possibilities of keeping up idealism in the 21st century. By the end of the four days we hope the participating delegates will have left with a sense of the importance of the United Nations and its place in a wider international political system. In regard of our theme this year and the pressing international issues on the agenda of the international community, the organizing team has decided on including four committees; Security Council, United Nations Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, ECOSOC and the Historical Committee which will simulate the Paris Peace Conference.
Yet, the UNISUN experience is not only an academically and intellectually stimulating one; it is also accompanied with an excellent social program with several parties that take will take place in Utrecht and the campus of University College Utrecht, and the possibility to participate in Queen’s Day on the 30th of April which is one of the most, if not the most, vibrant national days in the Netherlands.
Our organizing team has been working tirelessly to provide you with the best academic and social experience that we can, and we are looking forward to seeing you in Utrecht in May 2009.
